Probably the rarest and most
sought after Belter furniture are his patented
bedsteads and bureaus. They are easy to
identify from a distance because they are
absolutely unique in both their design and
construction. I have seen one Belter patent
bedstead that was not labelled, but nearly
all bedsteads are branded with Belter's
name and the patent date of August 19, 1856.
Patent bureaus are branded with Belter's
name and the word "Patent". Most
beds and bureaus are branded in several
places.
I have seen several pieces of bedroom furniture
that are not labelled by Belter but are
commonly attributed to Belter based upon
their method and quality of construction
and decoration. While Belter probably made
many other varieties of bedroom furniture
in addition to his patented bedsteads and
bureaus, it is certain he made armoires,
dressing tables and mirrors.
