I believe Fountain Elms pattern
is the most numerous of Belter's pierced
carved furniture. It is common to see Fountain
Elms pattern furniture in mahogany wood
as well as rosewood. I have seen Fountain
Elms pattern furniture made of another kind
of wood I call "box wood" because
it is basically grainless, and the grain
it does have is not attractive. I assume
the boxwood examples were made to be grain
painted to look like some more desireable
material.
Fountain Elms pattern furniture
is known to be made by Belter because one
important suite of Fountain Elms has descended
intact with its original bill of sale. Part
of this documented suite is on display in
Austin, Texas, at the Governor's mansion.
The configuration of the
arabeques in the backs of Fountain Elms
pattern furniture is an elaborate expansion
of the closed carved Rosalie pattern.
