Henry Clay pattern chairs have a very distinctive outline, looking a little like a stylized cabochon or figure eight. There are are two horizontal arabesques in a typical Henry Clay chair back, one shaped like an inverted 'U' framing the top and the second shaped like a lyre framing the bottom. Henry Clay chairs and sofas have stylized shell carving between the arabesques and the upholstery.

Henry Clay Sofa backs have carving on all three crests and the chair backs have carving on the crests. The knees are typically carved with a rose surrounded by leaves. The middle of the front seat apron is carved with flowers and stylized foliage.
