When John Henry Belter applied
for his patent for an improved method of
bending wood in 1858 he made a tiny parlor
chair to accompany his patent request. This
pattern of this chair, less than 12"
tall, is the same as the pattern we identify
as Patent pattern. There are also labelled
examples of chairs in the Patent pattern.
The configuration of the
arabeques in the backs of Patent pattern
furniture is an elaborate expansion of the
closed carved Henry Clay pattern.
