As you might expect, Plain Pattern is just that. The backs of Plain Pattern furniture are banded with a simple, single, continuous arabesque. The knees have a stylized shell carving and the front seat apron is plain.

I have included Plain pattern in order to differentiate it from Belter's other very basic and similar Scroll pattern. While Plain pattern furniture is not common, I have seen enough of it that I consider it to be a design of its own rather than a variation of Scroll pattern. Plain pattern furniture has one simple band, or arabesque, framing the back of a sofa, chair, or meridienne.
Some pieces of plain pattern furniture have a carved crest above the arabesque, others do not.
