While being rare in comparison
to Victorian furniture in general, Rosalie
is the most common pattern of Belter parlor
seating furniture.
Rosalie sofas have carving
on all three crests above the arabesques,
and the chairs have carving on the crest,
above the arabesque. The knees are typically
carved with a rose surrounded by leaves.
The middle of the front seat apron is carved
with flowers and stylized foliage.
Note that there are clumps
of grapes and foliage flanking the chair
crest and the two sofa side crests. The
center crest of a Rosalie sofa does not
have these clumps of grapes and foliage
beside it.
Because Rosalie is such a
prolific pattern, there are lots of pictures
here, so you can compare the pieces to see
any differences. While all pieces of Rosalie
are nearly identical in general shape and
appearance there can be, as is typical with
Belter furniture in general, significant
differences in the quality, motif and amount
of carved decoration. In general, more carving
is good.
