This group of thinly laminated
Rococo Revival furniture made in the United
States in the mid nineteenth century is
different in many ways from the furniture
we know was made by John Henry Belter. Some
experts believe some or all this furniture
was made by Belter despite the differences.
Some of the differences include round back
legs, padded arm rests, square edges in
the laminated backs rather than tapered
edges, scrolling vines outline the laminated
backs rather than arabesques, and the crests
are typically vertical rather than horizontal
in design. This furniture is very well made,
but it just looks different that the furniture
we know Belter made.
Most of the furniture in
this group appears to have been made by
the same unknown individual or manufacturer.
There is a significant amount of this furniture
still extant.
